Email tracking
Apple Mail Privacy Protection and what it did to open rates
Apple loads tracking images for every message, read or not. Here is what that broke, and what still works.

Does email tracking still work with Apple Mail Privacy Protection?
Click tracking works exactly as before. Open tracking still fires, but Apple loads the image whether or not anyone reads the message — so opens from Apple Mail should be treated as delivery signals, not proof that someone read it.
Why it matters
Apple prefetches identified
Fetches coming from Apple’s own network are classified as machine opens rather than people.
Your headline stays comparable
Because prefetches are excluded, your open rate does not jump simply because more of your list moved to Apple Mail.
Clicks unaffected
Apple does not tap your links on a reader’s behalf, so click rate survived the change intact.
Set it up
Three steps, no developer
01
Track as normal
No configuration is needed for this — classification is automatic.
02
Read the split
Human opens headline; Apple and Gmail fetches are named separately.
03
Lead with clicks
Use click rate for decisions and opens for rough direction.
Watch it end to end: recipients, snippets, per-person results
FAQ
Frequently asked questions
What exactly does Apple Mail Privacy Protection do?+
It routes remote content through Apple’s servers and pre-loads it in the background, so the sender sees an open and a masked location regardless of whether the message was read.
Should I stop tracking opens?+
Not necessarily. Opens remain useful for spotting a total failure — a send where nothing loads at all — as long as nobody treats them as a readership count.
How do you tell an Apple prefetch from a real open?+
Apple’s relay fetches come from Apple’s own address space, which is the reliable signal — the user-agent it sends is indistinguishable from ordinary desktop Safari, so user-agent alone cannot tell them apart.
