Per-recipient email tracking: who opened, who clicked, who ignored you
An open rate is one number for a whole send. Per-recipient tracking tells you what each individual did, so you can follow up with the people who actually engaged.
Per-recipient email tracking gives every recipient their own token, so instead of one open or click rate for the whole campaign you can see which specific people opened, which clicked, and which did neither. Clicks are reliable; opens remain an estimate.
Most email reports give you one number: this campaign got a 22% open rate, say. That average is fine for a huge newsletter, but it hides the thing you usually need most. You cannot reply to a percentage. If you are sending outreach, proposals or a note to your best fifty customers, the useful question is not how many opened, it is which people did.
What per-recipient tracking is
Instead of one shared pixel and one shared link, every recipient gets their own token woven into both. When a fetch or a tap comes back, it is stamped with that token, so the report reads as a list of people rather than a single rate. You see this person opened, that person clicked your pricing link, this other person did neither.
directinapp does this without keeping your list: each address is stored only as a one-way hash, with an optional label you add so the report stays readable. The full setup lives on the email tracking page.
Why an aggregate rate is not enough
A campaign rate answers "did this send work on average". A per-recipient view answers "who should I talk to next". For a sales sequence those are completely different questions, and only the second one changes what you do on Monday morning.
Clicks per recipient are the reliable part
Keep the honesty rule per person too. A per-recipient open is still an estimate, because a mail app may have loaded the pixel on its own. A per-recipient click is not: it means that specific person deliberately tapped a link. So when you rank your list by engagement, rank it by who clicked, and read opens as a soft hint. The detail on that is in email click tracking.
Following up on the right people
Once the report is per-person, the follow-up writes itself. Reply first to the people who clicked your main link, since they showed real intent. Give the openers-only a lighter nudge. Leave the truly cold contacts for a different angle instead of blasting the whole list again. For small sends run straight from your inbox, email tracking without a marketing platform covers the same per-recipient view.
The quick version
Give every recipient a token, read the report as a list of people rather than one rate, and act on who clicked. It turns a vanity percentage into a follow-up list, which is the only reason to track a small send in the first place.
