Shopify conversion tracking without an app: a no-code setup

See which link, post or campaign drove each Shopify sale, no app required. How click IDs plus a server-side webhook attribute revenue in rupees.

Shopify conversion tracking without an app means attributing each sale to the link, post or campaign that drove it using a click identifier and a server-side webhook, instead of installing a tracking app from the Shopify App Store. directinapp does this on the Business plan: every smart link carries a click ID, and when a Shopify order is created a webhook matches that order, and its value in rupees, to the exact link that earned it.

Shopify shows you how many orders you got, but not which Instagram post, WhatsApp broadcast or influencer link actually drove each one. The usual fix is to install yet another tracking app, add its pixel, and hope it survives Shopify checkout. There is a lighter way: attribute sales with a click identifier on the link itself plus a single server-side webhook, with no app to install. Here is how it works and how to set it up.

Why avoid another Shopify app?

Every app you add to Shopify is another subscription, another set of permissions over your store data, and another script that can slow the storefront or break when Shopify updates checkout. Attribution apps are also fragile: Shopify restricts custom scripts on the checkout page for non-Plus stores, so pixel-only tools often miss the exact moment a sale completes.

Attribution that runs server-side, off the back of a real order event, does not depend on a script loading on the checkout at all. That is the difference between "we think this campaign worked" and a sale matched to the link that earned it.

How does app-free Shopify conversion tracking work?

The method has two parts. First, the link a shopper taps carries a short click identifier, so the visit is tagged before they reach your store. Second, when the order is created, Shopify sends an order webhook to the tracking service, which matches that order, and its rupee value, back to the click that started the journey.

Because the match happens on the server after the order is real, it does not rely on cookies surviving Safari or a pixel firing on the thank-you page. directinapp uses exactly this model on the Business plan: smart links carry the click ID, and a Shopify webhook records the sale, the value in rupees, and the link responsible. See the Shopify conversion tracking page for the exact setup.

Set it up in three steps

1. Create your smart links in directinapp for each place you share: the Instagram bio, a WhatsApp broadcast, an influencer post. Each link already carries a click ID.

2. Connect Shopify by pointing an order webhook at directinapp. This is a one-time setting in Shopify, not an app install.

3. Share the links as usual. From then on, every completed order is matched to the link that drove it, and the value appears in rupees in your dashboard.

With an app vs without: what changes

Works on non-Plus storesLimited at checkoutYes

What you can measure once it is live

Beyond a raw click count, you see the sales, signups and leads each link drove, the revenue and average value by link in rupees, and the conversion rate for a link or a whole campaign. A feed lists every individual conversion, so you can separate the WhatsApp broadcast that quietly drives repeat orders from the reel that gets views but no checkouts.

Does it work with Shopify checkout and the Shop app?

Yes. Because attribution is triggered by the order event rather than a script on the checkout page, it records the sale whether the buyer completes checkout on the web or through the Shop app, and it is unaffected by Shopify limits on custom checkout scripts for non-Plus plans. If the buyer tapped a directinapp link first, the order can be matched to it.
