App store links: one address that sends iPhones and Androids to the right place

A Play Store link shown to an iPhone user is a dead end, and half your audience is on the other platform. One smart link solves it — and tells you which channel actually drove installs.

A smart app store link is a single short link that detects the visitor’s device and forwards them to the correct destination — the App Store on iOS, the Play Store on Android, and a web page on desktop — so one address can be shared everywhere without stranding anyone on the wrong platform’s listing.

If you have an app, you have run into this. You want people to install it, so you share the store link — and immediately you have a problem, because there are two stores. Post the Play Store address and every iPhone user who taps it lands on a page that cannot help them. Post both and you have added a decision to the one moment where friction costs the most.

In India the split is lopsided but not lopsided enough to ignore: Android dominates by volume, while iOS users are disproportionately the higher-spending segment. Sending either group to the wrong store is expensive, and sending them to a page that says “choose your platform” is only slightly less so.

Why the two-links habit leaks installs

Two links in a bio, or a landing page with two badges, looks harmless. It is not. Every extra tap between wanting the app and having it loses a share of people, and this particular tap arrives at the worst possible moment — after the persuasion has worked and before the install has happened.

It also damages your measurement. Two links mean two counts that have to be added up by hand, and neither tells you whether the person who tapped actually installed. You end up reporting taps on badges, which is a metric about your landing page rather than about your app.

One link, three outcomes

A smart link reads the device on the way through and routes accordingly, in a single hop the visitor does not perceive.

VisitorGoes toWhy
iPhone or iPadThe App Store listingOpens in the App Store app, ready to install
Android phoneThe Play Store listingOpens in the Play Store app, one tap from installing
Desktop browserA landing pageWhere a QR code moves the install to the phone it belongs on
Anything unexpectedThe same landing pageA fallback beats a broken link, always

The desktop case is the one most teams forget, and it is where a QR code belongs rather than an apology. Someone reading on a laptop cannot install an app there; give them a code to scan and the install continues on the right device. You can build one on the QR code generator.

Send them past the listing where you can

Installing is not the goal — using is. If someone tapped a link about a specific product, dropping them on your app’s home screen after install makes them hunt for the thing that interested them, and a good share simply will not. Deep linking carries that context through the install so the app opens on the right screen. Deep links 101 explains the mechanics, and the deep link generator builds them.

Now the channel question is answerable

Because everything runs through one address, every placement can have its own version of it — one for the Instagram bio, one for the YouTube description, one per creator, one on the packaging insert. Each keeps a separate count in link analytics, so the install number stops being a single mysterious total and becomes a ranked list of what produced it.

Build the routing on the Play Store link shortener or the App Store link shortener; both produce the same one-address behaviour, and smart links covers the wider set of rules you can attach.
