How to open a link in your phone’s real browser, not the in-app one
Instagram, Facebook and LinkedIn open links in a cramped browser inside the app, where your logins and autofill vanish. Here’s how to escape to Chrome or Safari, app by app, on Android and iPhone.
An in-app browser is the stripped-down web view that apps such as Instagram, Facebook and LinkedIn use to open links without letting you leave the app. To open a link in your phone’s real browser instead, use the app’s menu (usually the three dots) and choose Open in browser, or copy the link and paste it into Chrome or Safari yourself.
You tap a link in Instagram. A browser opens, but it isn’t Chrome or Safari. It’s a small one living inside Instagram, with no address bar you trust, no saved passwords, and a sign-in that forgets you the moment you close it. This is the in-app browser, and on an Indian phone that mostly lives in Instagram and WhatsApp, you meet it a dozen times a day.

Why apps keep you in their own browser
When a link opened your real browser, you left the app. The app would rather you didn’t. Keeping you in its own web view leaves you one back-tap from the feed, and lets the app see what you do on that page. Instagram, Facebook, Messenger, LinkedIn and Threads all default to this. WhatsApp used to be the clean exception, handing links straight to your default browser, but newer builds ship their own in-app browser you can switch off in Settings, so now it’s only sometimes the way out.
What the in-app browser costs you
The cramped window is the smallest problem. Your logins don’t carry over, so a page you were already signed into asks you to sign in again. Your password manager and autofill often stay hidden, so you type a card number by hand or abandon the purchase. Each app also keeps its own separate cookies, so a session you started in Instagram’s browser is a stranger to the one in Chrome. Anything past reading needs your real browser: a checkout, a login, a form you actually have to fill.
Escape it, app by app

The trick that works in every app
If you can’t find the menu, use the copy-and-paste hatch. Tap the share icon or the address, copy the link, open Chrome or Safari yourself, and paste it in. Two extra taps, and it works everywhere, even the apps that bury the Open in browser option on purpose.
Android gives you more control than iPhone
On Android, an app can hand a link straight to your default browser through an intent, so Open in browser drops you into Chrome, or whatever you set as default. On iPhone it’s narrower: Open in browser takes you to your default browser, usually Safari unless you’ve changed it, and Apple won’t let one app force a specific app open. You still get out of the in-app view, you just get less say over where you land.
If you’re the one sharing the link
Say you run a store or a page and you’re pasting a link in your Instagram bio or a WhatsApp broadcast. You can’t reach into someone else’s phone and press Open in browser for them. What you can do is hand out a link that refuses to dead-end inside the in-app browser: one that opens the real app when it exists, and passes cleanly to the browser when it doesn’t.

The honest limits
No trick forces every app on every phone. iPhone keeps you nearer to Safari than you might like, and a few apps hide the exit on purpose. But between the app menu and the copy-paste hatch, you can get almost any link into a browser that remembers who you’re. And if you’re the one handing out the link, the better move is to never send people into the box at all.
