How to track TikTok links (and what TikTok hides)
TikTok gives you views and nothing else. Here is how to see which video, which link placement and which bio slot actually sent the buyer.
TikTok link tracking means replacing raw links in videos, bios and comments with a separate short link for each placement so every tap is counted and attributed to the exact video or bio position it came from — measurement TikTok itself does not provide.
TikTok is where attention lives right now. Creators drive shopping behaviour, D2C brands run entire acquisition funnels on it, and small sellers treat it as their main storefront. What it does not do is tell you anything useful about what is working.
The entire analytics surface is a view count and, for creators, a follower count. Neither survives contact with a business question. Views do not tell you who left for your site, and a million views on one video does not tell you whether that video or your bio link slot carried the sale.
Why TikTok traffic disappears in your analytics
Tap a link inside the TikTok app and it usually opens in TikTok's own in-app browser. That browser frequently strips the referrer, so the visit lands in your analytics as direct traffic — indistinguishable from someone typing your address by hand.
The effect is the same disappearing act described in vanity metrics versus metrics that pay: the number that is easy to see is not the number that matters, and the one that matters has gone missing. Your best-performing TikTok video could be producing nothing and you would never know.
The three placements that each need their own link
The fix is the same discipline that works on every platform: never reuse a link across two placements. Build a separate one for each, all pointing at the same destination and each counting separately in link analytics.
| Placement | What it answers | Setup tip |
|---|---|---|
| Video description | Which video drove clicks | New link per video, not per campaign |
| Bio link | How many reached your page from the bio | Rotate per campaign; track each rotation |
| Comment or pinned comment | Whether pinned links outperform the description | Treat the comment as a separate placement |
What link in bio actually means for measurement
TikTok only allows one clickable link in a bio. That restriction is what makes a link-in-bio page valuable: one slot, many destinations, each tracked individually. Every button on the page carries its own count, so you can see whether the shop button or the WhatsApp link is doing more work without changing anything on TikTok itself.
Without per-link data you are decorating a page on instinct. With it, you are arranging it by evidence. A link-in-bio page that converts is one built on that evidence rather than guesswork.
The honest numbers to watch
Ignore TikTok's view count as a proxy for sales. The number that matters is taps on your specific short link, broken down by the placement it came from, followed through to conversions. If a video has five hundred thousand views and twelve link taps, it entertained people but did not drive commercial behaviour. A smaller video with two hundred taps on the link and twenty sales is the one worth doubling down on.
directinapp tracks every tap from every TikTok placement separately, so the comparison is fair: the video, the bio slot and the comment each report for themselves, and what they sold is visible in the same dashboard.
